DFPS has several "resource rooms" around the State that supports Adult Protective Services caseworkers find goods to assist our clients. Resource rooms are set up like a store where caseworkers can locate items 24-hours a day for basic necessities and emergency resources for vulnerable adults who have been abused and/or neglected. This includes items like Ensure (dietary supplement), adult diapers, and toiletries for adults and those with disabilities.
Resource rooms for vulnerable adults go by different names such as Bridge Rooms, Silver Star Rooms, and Silver Ribbon Rooms. Some receive assistance from non-profit corporations while others are supported by their local community and or local boards. Even our statewide board, Texas Partners for Adult Protective Services, contribute with donations to assist in keeping these rooms stocked.
APS workers say the local resource rooms saves time and money. A lot of our clients live on only $500 to $550 a month and maybe $10 to $15 in food stamps. By giving them supplies like detergent, bath soap, and toilet paper, and the like frees up their money for things like food, shelter and medicine. And in most areas, we have 24-hour access to these essential items in order to assist our clients.
