This program pairs university-degreed registered nurses with low-income, first-time mothers to improve prenatal care and provide one-on-one education and counseling, focusing on child development.
Women enroll in the program early in the second trimester of their pregnancy (by the 28th week of pregnancy), and a nurse begins visiting them. The visits, which usually take place in the family’s home, continue throughout the woman’s pregnancy and until her child is 2 years old. The nurses provide support, education and counseling on health, parenting, developmental issues and life skills.
