Effect of Trauma in Teens

In teenagers, trauma can affect their:

  • ability to make sound decisions (knowing when they are in danger and when they are safe)
  • ability to control their behavior
  • thinking about the result of their behavior
  • deal with stress

As a result, they are at increased risk for:

  • behavior that puts themselves or someone else at risk
  • school problems
  • decreased academic achievement
  • poor choices
  • aggressive or criminal behaviors
