PAL is the DFPS program to help you transition from DFPS care and support to being an adult on your own. Contact regional PAL staff about:

  • Your college benefits.
  • Referrals to workforce services.
  • Case management and access to community resources.
  • Attending a PAL camp or activity with other youth.
  • Life skills training (age 15 ½ to 18).
  • Money to help you with education and living expenses, including:
    • A transitional living allowance of up to $1,000.
    • Aftercare room and board assistance of up to $3,000 (ages 18-21).

The HHSC Foster Care Ombudsman investigates complaints and possible rights violations of children and youth in foster care under age 18. The Ombudsman ensures that youth understand their rights while in foster care, reviews a youth’s concerns about their case, answers questions, and works with youth and other people to improve their care.

TRANSITION CENTERS

Transition centers are one-stop places to serve the many needs of older youth, homeless youth, and other at-risk youth, ages 15½ to 25 and are supported by partnerships between DFPS and their providers, and the Texas Workforce Commission. Read More...
  • Transition Centers are not part of DFPS, but are one-stop places run by non-profit organizations and serve foster youth and young adults. Staff can help you with:
    • Finding a job & getting ready to have one.
    • Finding child care for your children.
    • Finding a place to live.
    • Meeting your educational goals.
    • Exploring colleges and careers.
    • Getting food.
    • Getting help with drugs or mental health issues.
    • Receiving PAL services.
