There are specific housing options for foster youth turning 18 years old. Explore the housing options available to former foster youth and other options in the community to decide which housing option will work for you. Whichever option you choose, be sure to do research to know the requirements and deadlines for applications. Also don't be afraid to reach out to your PAL coordinator if you have questions.
Temporary Housing During School Breaks
If you are attending college or a trade school and need to find temporary housing during breaks or holidays (such as summer and Christmas), check with the Financial Aid Office at your school for housing resources.
Texas’s public higher education institutions are required to help young adults formerly in the conservatorship of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) in locating temporary housing between academic terms.
Know Your Housing Rights
The Attorney General of Texas’s Consumer Protection Division is in charge of the rights of renters, also known as “tenant rights”. It’s a good idea to look over your rights before you even rent a place. If you do run into trouble, or think that your landlord is doing something unfair or illegal, you can make a complaint and possibly get help.

Help for Texans is through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs; they can connect you with resources for help with rent, utility bills, emergency housing, and homeless shelters.
Section 8 Housing
Section 8 housing is a federal program that helps low income families and individuals with housing. The Rental Help: Texas page tells you about section 8 housing; what it is, if you are eligible, how to apply, and your rights if you live in section 8 housing.
- 2-1-1 is 24/7 and free. Just dial 2-1-1, and 2-1-1 can connect you with local government and private resources for affordable housing.
- FindHelp.org, formerly Aunt Bertha, is a database that you can also search. It has a section for housing.
- LowIncomeHousing.us is another site that connects you with low income housing resources.
