Elder Abuse Prevention Month Events

Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed May Elder Abuse Prevention Month in Texas. Help raise awareness of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults by joining us at one of these events.

ABILENE

Collaborating to Combat a Crisis Tuesday May 21 and Wednesday May 22 8:00 am to 5 pm both days

  • Description: Community Movie Club that meets monthly to watch a movie and receive information regarding resources for seniors in the community. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item for the food pantry. 6th Annual Go Purple Chili Cook-Off- May 16th, 2019 11:30am-2:00pm

  • Description:  In honor of Elder Abuse Prevention Month, APS Silver Star Board and APS hosting the 6th Annual Go Purple Chili Cook Off.  We are asking several of our community partners to bring their best tasting chili to be judged.  Immediately following the contest, the community can come and purchase a hotdog plate for $5.00 and the opportunity to taste some or all of the contest chili.  The idea is to bring the community together, have some fun and raise awareness on how to prevent Elder Abuse in our community.

14th Annual APS Houston Older Americans Month Conference, May 21, 2019

  • Description:  May is Elder Abuse Awareness month, and Adult Protective Services will be hosting our 14th Annual Older American’s Month Conference.  We are bringing together professionals from the Houston area community for a day of training, networking and exchanging ideas that benefit vulnerable adults. This year’s conference will highlight community solutions to homelessness, poverty and self-neglect of older adults and individuals with disabilities in the Houston and surrounding areas.   The training and education provided at this event will create an awareness for issues facing vulnerable adults in our community and discuss solutions to such problems.

Baylor University DDASH Course Presentation, May 9, 2019

  • Description:  The Baylor College of medicine course hopes to engage  medical students to pause and reflect upon posited mechanisms for racial, ethnic and social disparities, and the role of health care delivery in mitigating disparities. Students will be exposed to initiatives geared toward improving health equity and emerge with a better understanding of the diverse populations they serve. DDASH is one of the three main blocks in the curriculum for ALL medical students to understand social determinants of health. APS will conduct a thorough lecture on elder abuse and neglect.
